METER READINGS and LEAK DETECTION
It's that time of year again when households are getting ready for the spring and summer seasons and the Water Department begins reading meters. If you have concerns about high water bills, here are some preventative tips:
Toilet leaks can waste as much as four to five gallons of water per minute and cost you up to $100.00 per month in increased water bills. Toilet leaks occur in two ways and are often very difficult to detect. Another huge cause of increased water bills is a faulty irrigation system. Irrigation systems should be regularly maintained in order to keep them efficiently working year after year. Damage from lawn equipment or from improper winterization can cause leaks and failures. Leaks can waste up to 12 gallons per minute! The Irrigation Association has named July "Smart Irrigation Month". For advice on installing a new irrigation system or tips on maintaining an existing system, visit the Irrigation Association's web-site at www.smartirrigationmonth.org.
Soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems are a great alternative for watering plants. Make sure to turn them completely off when not in use as leaving a hose on can greatly increase your water bill. Always place sprinklers wisely. Make sure your sprinkler doesn't overshoot your lawn and water the street or sidewalk.
