EEE has caused major headaches to all that use the Town's playing fields. But I fully support the board of Health in trying to safeguard our resident from these deadly diseases. As folds know, there is a ban of all outdoor recreational activities from 6pm - 8am. These type of bans cause problems for groups trying to use the Town's playing fields. Hopefully with mutual cooperation with Town and School we can minimize the impact.

Where did the summer go? It has been several months since my last entry. Sorry for the delay. Summer was very busy but great weather contributed to an outstanding season. All recreation programs seemed to go very well with great response from the community.
The golf course, North Hill Country Club, enjoyed a spectacular season with excellent level of play.
During the summer I was also busy preparing the FY09 budget, which we are beginning to explore.
The Town meeting authorized pool buidling study was also completed, with a presentation by the architect at last night's Board of Selectmen's meeting. The architect is recommending approximately 1 million dollars is needed to fix up the building to present day standards and 1.7 million dollars if we want to upgrade the facility with some needed changes.

Pool issues
The Town received a detailed building analysis from Graham Meus Associates last month. This study gave the Town some very useful information concerning the condition of the 32 year old Percy walker pool. In a nutshell, the architectural firm recommends that the Town renovate the building. The least expensive renovation to bring the building up to date would cost 1 million dollars. A second proposal to do more significant changes would cost approximately 1.6 million.
I have been a Certified Pool Operator for 17 years and have worked with pools for over 20 years. I often get questions about pool water problems, physical issues, maintenance issues, etc… Without going in to a long dissertation; here are some quick thoughts on your backyard pool. These are not recommendations and you should talk to your pool company for more specific ideas. 1. Chlorine: any type of chlorine that you use should be a stabilized chlorine. Keep in mind that the basic function of chlorine is to disinfect your water. This means that chlorine effectively kills many of the organisms that are harmful to humans, although it does not kill all of them. Make sure that your FAC (free available chlorine) has a reading of at least 1.0 at all times. 2. Water Balance: There are many different factors that go into determining if your water is properly balanced. Water balance is key to make sure that your pool water is safe for your swimmers as well as the pool and its systems. Without getting into a long discussion, make sure that your alkalinity is balanced first. If would personally recommend a reading of 80 and 150. Then balance your PH. This should be somewhere between 7.2 and 7.8 PPM. (If you do not have your alkalinity in the correct range, your PH will bounce all over the place!!!) After your have achieved these two criteria, then you can move on to water hardness and/or other issues. 3. It is always a good idea to have your water tested by a professional that truly is the only way for you to find out what is in your water and how to fix any potential problems.
Good luck over the summer and hope you enjoy your backyard pool!
