Potassium Iodide (KI)

In the event of an accident or attack at a nuclear power plant, radioactive iodine may be released. Radioactive iodine can cause thyroid cancer and mental retardation in children of exposed pregnant women. Children and infants, including the unborn, are the most vulnerable. The use of potassium iodide (KI) will help protect against these dangers, by blocking the thyroid with a harmless form of iodine.

KI, a small pill, must be taken before or within six hours of exposure to be effective. It does not protect against the other harmful releases – only radioactive iodine. One pill provides protection for twenty-four hours.

KI is FDA approved. It is a regular component of over-the-counter cough medicines and ordinary table salt, and has been stockpiled for the public in nations around the world. However, adverse reactions are possible for those who are allergic to iodine. If you cannot use ordinary table salt or eat shellfish, you are allergic. Anyone with an iodine allergy and considering the use of KI should consult with a healthcare provider. You should follow the directions for storage and use included with the product.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?
KI pills are available free to all residents or businesses within 10 miles of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. They will mail one pill per person, enough to protect for 24 hours.
